Sometimes you hear a band that, in addition to giving you a dose of pleasure, secretly makes you a little bit jealous. Such is the case with Dawn Brothers. Because, jeez, how musically gifted this foursome is! Effortlessly, so it seems. These gentlemen mix roots and soul in a Rotterdam fashion: unadulterated and full of craftsmanship. Delicious music, indebted to Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, CCR, The Band and basically everything that is raw and full of soul at the same time. "This band just oozes musicality: they could pick up two soda bottles and a toothbrush and make it swing," writes their web biographer on the band's site. An observation that is quite accurate. On their latest record Double Cream, the gentlemen join forces with DeWolff, which resulted in fourteen timeless songs. Dawn Brothers once again sounds like the best of the sixties with the urgency of today.
The fact that the guitar is a super versatile instrument is what the Bridge Festival is all about. Merel van Hoek (1994) explores the instrument in her own unique way. She is a guitarist and composer from The Hague who lets you dream away with the sounds she makes on her instrument. She cites Radiohead, Tamino and Ólafur Arnalds as sources of inspiration for her instrumental music. This musician, who graduated from the conservatory in The Hague, models her musical landscape on the intersection of pop, jazz, indie and classical music. She creates beautiful clean ambient guitar lines that were already central to the music of Eskina, one of the musical projects Merel is involved in. Not long before Bridge festival, the guitarist's debut EP will be released via Sonna Records. Songs with which she will undoubtedly aim high, also when played live.
