JEAN-PAUL GROOVE
Feel like watching the most infectious video you'll see today—and probably for the rest of the week? Great! Put on your best dancing shoes and head straight to Ex-Drummer by Jean-Paul Groove. It's not often that we watch clips like this all the way through from start to finish, but with these Belgians, we even put it on repeat. Because wow, so much happens with this energetic trio from Brussels (Nils Hilhorst on guitar, bassist Jeremy Debuysschere, and drummer Denis Baeten). It's quite astonishing how these gentlemen manage to make danceable music while frivolously experimenting with unconventional rhythms, strong riffs, and quirky melodies. Violent party music is how the creators of these densely populated songs have baptized their style. They're clearly schooled musicians who have learned to let go of their knowledge in search of adventure. It's punk, funk, jazz, and techno in a bizarre blender. Irresistible if you have even the slightest inclination toward an unlikely combination of artists like The Prodigy, Battles, Nerve, Die Antwoord, Rotterdam Termination Source, Pat Metheny, De Staat, Wayne Krantz, King Gizzard, LCD Soundsystem, Jojo Mayer, and Allan Holdsworth.
